Just a few weeks ago, Nebraska Wesleyan University student James Hamrick was rehearsing lines for the rock musical 鈥淏loody Bloody Andrew Jackson.鈥

The summer theatre opportunity in his native city of Houston, Texas, would add another experience to his already impressive resume.

But an interesting change of events has Hamrick changing his summer plans.

It was 2:20 a.m. 鈥 well beyond Sheryl Rinkol鈥檚 bedtime. Sleep wasn鈥檛 an option as she listened to ocean waves slap the side of her cruise ship while it floated 2 陆 miles above the Titanic wreckage.

鈥淚t was very surreal,鈥 said Rinkol, assistant director of Nebraska Wesleyan University鈥檚 Cooper Center. 鈥淚t made me think about my own mortality.鈥

Kyle Rohrich and Alex Cowsky spent the first two weeks of the spring semester in five Spanish cities where they researched public opinion on the Basque conflict.

鈥淚 can read plenty of academic journals about what people went through, but it鈥檚 so different when you can actually go and hear people talk about it themselves,鈥 said Rohrich.

Nebraska Wesleyan University students begin their college careers raking leaves, painting walls, and organizing shelves at Lincoln nonprofit organizations as part of the annual 鈥淟end-A-Hand to Lincoln.鈥

It鈥檚 an opportunity for students to serve their new community and develop an affection for giving back.
